His mother was forced into an arranged marriage with another mongoose, and she was forced to give Jem up, mages, templars, and various groups all pick from orphanages and Jem was taken in by the mages for his talent. He doesn't blame his parents, his mother and him use their magic to stay in contact and brainstorm ways of finding his father and reunite their family. His mana color is orange, obviously
